User Journey – Wood Walk

This project is a user journey exercise. The main challenges consisted of highlighting a personal passion or hobby and leading the user through several different stages of my own choosing.

I decided to use this opportunity to incorporate a real passion of mine: woodwork. I could showcase the products I had created, as well as explaining my motivation and its evolution throughout the project. In particular, I wished to communicate what woodwork means to me and how it has opened up my perception to new creative ideas and modes of expression.

From a design point of view, it also felt like the perfect time to try something different, all the while still keeping things nice and simple.

A journey that evolves

UX - Progression to evolution
The user journey which I wished to communicate was my personal progression and evolution into the world of woodwork. For that reason, the journey is divided into three main sections. This way, it is also a journey of exploration and discovery for the user, since in each of the sections the user can find new related subsections.

Skeumorphism design

UI - The look for the feel
I think "Skeumorphism" matches perfectly with the wood concept, contributing dimensionality and creating the impression of something more tangible and tactile. This was one of the main concepts I wanted to communicate.

Hover

The fun of the On & Off
I included hover animation to inject some interactivity into the journey. By putting the user in control of bringing the page to life through their own interaction, I emphasised the idea that it is only through exploration that we can make new discoveries.

Exploring hover animation

Here, I was particularly interested in how the elements evolve from one state to another, without sacrificing either the balance or the style of the page. My goal was to make it attractive and interactive, without pushing the user out of the page’s environment.

Animation makes it easier

I personally love animation. It’s a really quick way of communicating a concept without requiring any effort from the user, while simultaneously bringing life to the design and drawing attention towards the most important ideas.

Graphics and pictures

Graphics are used more frequently at the beginning of the journey, while pictures feature more prominently towards its end. This is another way to demonstrate the evolution of the project, since it is only as you advance along the journey that the project becomes more and more real.
